The Stumptown Series, which draws its moniker from Portland's historical nickname, is made up of four events starting late in September. Although organizers and participants describe the races as low-key, the first, a 5K, takes place on an iconic course--Portland Meadows, a horse racing venue that's also the site of Nike Cross Nationals every December--and draws a consistently fast field with some famous faces.

Each event costs $20 and allows race-day entries. Runners can compete individually or on teams. The field is usually about 150 runners, with an occasional surprise appearance by an Olympian, like Kara Goucher or Alan Webb, whose wife, Julia, says she enjoys the "good opportunities for big competition." Although Portland Meadows has a reputation for mud, drainage is improving. Last year, the grass held up well in pouring rain for the first Stumptown race.
