Foods That Cut Inflammation to Improve Performance
A week after winning the North Island’s Tarawera 100K, Sage Canaday (Boulder, Colo.) skipped across the Wellington Strait to New Zealand’s South Island where he cruised to a 4:45 winning time in the 50K. Canaday was nearly an hour in front of his chasers. Sandi Nypaver (Boulder, Colo.) topped the women’s field at 6:08.

Stephanie Howe (Bend, Ore.) missed last weekend’s Chuckanut 50K with illness, but rebounded here with a strong 4:56 50K through the White Tank Mountain Regional Park. Erin Phelps (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and Adria Snowdon (Edmonthon, Alb.) clocked 5:41 and 5:48 to round out the podium. Bret Sarnquist (Phoenix) won the men’s race at 4:32, 4 minutes up on Ryan Witko (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
The North Face Endurance Challenge – San Martin de los Andes, Argentina
Mike Foote (Missoula, Mont.) was victorious over a rugged 80K circuit in the Andes. Foote, who is scheduled to compete at next month’s Ultra-Trail Mt. Fuji 100, finished in 7:01.

Paul Patterson outdueled Nathan Holland in the 10.2-mile cult classic through Prentice-Cooper State Forest. Patterson’s first-place 1:12:25 was 24 seconds ahead of Holland. Matt Haley trailed in third at 1:13:49. Beth Meadows was all alone at the front of the women’s race, finishing in 1:27.17. Erin Hannen and Jillian Arnold ran 1:32:54 and 1:33:57 for second and third, respectively.
XTERRA Black Canyon Half Marathon – Black Canyon City, Ariz.
Newly minted USATF 50K road champion Emily Harrison (Flagstaff, Ariz.) took to the trails and rolled to a 1:41 winning time. Kelly Barmann was a close second in 1:44 and Erin Kennedy earned a podium position at 2:01. Nick Coury (Phoenix) kicked past Shawn Kleinstiver to win the men’s race. Just two seconds separated the pair at 1:34. Sean Mahoney came to the line third in 1:37.
Haulin' in the Holler 50K - Eleanor, W.V.
Gabe Rodriguez (Baltimore, Md.) stepped aside from his La Sportiva Mountain Cup campaign for two laps through Putnam County Park in the Appalachian foothills. Rodriguez finished in 4:10, 12 minutes ahead of Nathan Szabados. Cindy Martinesen was the first of just four female finishers in 6:07.
In the short-course 25K, Olympic trials marathoner Josh Simpson (Morgantown, W.V.) cruised to a 1:51 first-place finish. Megan Truelove was victorious over the women’s field in 2:18.
Antelope Island Buffalo Run - Syracuse, Utah
Matthew Van Horn (Farmington, Utah) and Jennilyn Eaton (Sandy, Utah) stampeded around the race’s namesake island within the Great Salt Lake. The pair topped their respective 100-mile fields with 16:47 and 20:18 winning times.
Scott Jaime (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), who is profiled in the recently released “Running the Edge” film, dominated the 50-mile race in 6:29, a 37-minute lead on his chasers. Amie Blackham (Draper, Utah) bested the women’s field in 7:57.
Rock/Creek River Gorge Trail Race - Chattanooga, Tenn.
Mike Owen (Pomeroy, Ohio) welcomed spring to the Blue Ridge Mountains with a 4:09 winning time. Rudy Rutemiller (Va.) and Darren Thomas (Va.) gained podium finishes in 4:17 and 4:22, respectively. Holly Bugin edged Elaine Griesbach for the women’s crown. The two frontrunners finished in 5:17 and 5:20, with Elizabeth Minnick a close third in 5:28.
Next Weekend
The wildly scenic Gorge Waterfalls 50K, and first-year Gorge Waterfalls 100K, will send runners on a cascading tour of Oregon's Columbia River Gorge. Brandy Erholtz (Evergreen, Colo.), a perennial U.S. mountain running team member, and Dominic Grossman (Brentwood, Calif.) are favored in the 50K. The 100K will see Yassine Diboun (Portland, Ore.) battle Rod Bien (Bend, Ore.), while Denise Bourassa (Bend, Ore.) is likely to be unmatched among the ladies.
