New to running in 2025? Here’s our recommended starter kit.
So you’ve made the decision to start running? Let us be the first ones to welcome you to the club. No matter how fast or far you go, or whether you use the run/walk method, you’re a runner from here on out.
As we explain in our new video training guide, How to Start Running, that first step is most important. Once you’ve laced up and stepped out the door, you’re already ahead of the curve. That said, starting on the right foot can make all the difference in how enjoyable—and sustainable—your running journey becomes.
Once you get in the habit, though, grabbing some high-performance running essentials will set you up for success. The right shoes can prevent injuries. Comfortable shorts and socks can keep you motivated and comfortable. A good pair of earbuds can turn a tough slog into a more enjoyable experience.
We know that searching for these items can seem daunting if you aren’t a long-time runner. If you aren’t sure how to get started, we’ve compiled some of our favorite running gear to recommend to beginners. These well-rounded clothes and accessories are comfortable, functional, and budget-friendly, so you can focus on hitting the ground running with confidence.

The Expert: I’ve been running for over 30 years, and spent the past 10 rigorously testing running shoes and gear for publications like Runner’s World and Outside. I’m also a private running coach. My online training program, shoe recommendation for new runners, helps runners of all abilities train for every kind of run, from a mile to a marathon.
What To Consider in Your First Set of Running Gear
You don’t need to buy new shoes or a moisture-wicking shirt, or really any equipment to start running, because most of us already have something that will get the job done. What truly matters is having the drive and determination to step outside and start moving—one foot in front of the other. If you are buying gear as a new runner, though, these are the first things you should pick up.
Comfort is King
Running is already a challenging and often uncomfortable activity, so make sure any kind of running gear you pick out feels comfortable. If something scratches or pulls or doesn’t fit the way it should when you try it on, that discomfort will likely worsen once you start running. Look for clothes made with soft materials that feel light and smooth when you wear them.
Moisture-Wicking Fabrics
If you’re buying dedicated running apparel, moisture-wicking fabrics such as polyester, nylon, or wool are an absolute must. These materials draw sweat and other moisture away from the skin and into and through the outer layer of the garment to evaporate and dry. This helps regulate body temperature so you don’t overheat. They also prevent chafing, keep you dry and enhancing comfort, allowing you to focus on your run rather than discomfort or overheating.
Budget vs. Quality
While opting for the cheapest gear may be tempting while you’re building up your running routine, I believe that investing in a few well-designed, high-quality pieces is far more helpful than buying a full wardrobe of cheap, low-quality workout clothes so you have an outfit for every day of the week.
Well-made running clothes and accessories will make you more comfortable, will last longer, and may even boost your confidence. Meanwhile, the cheapest options at most online retailers often feature low-quality materials and construction, which can compromise your comfort and may require you to spend more money sooner than you think. This is particularly important for running shoes and sports bras, which we consider critical high-wear items. Of course, some budget items have impressed us, such as these can keep you motivated and comfortable. A good pair of.
Crucially, “low quality” is not the same thing as inexpensive. Especially with shirts and shorts, quality brands make simple, affordable running apparel that will allow you to buy what you need without spending too much. Holding out for gear from a trusted brand at a price within your budget will make all the difference.
