During the last few months many top runners took to social media to cleverly make their announcements.

Alysia Montaño garnered a lot of attention in 2014 during her first pregnancy with daughter, Linnea, born in August of that year after her mom ran the U.S. outdoor championships while 34 weeks pregnant (the 800 meters in 2:32:13). Starting the next chapter 

Kim Smith is a three-time Olympian for New Zealand who also clocked the fastest half marathon on U.S. soil (1:07:11) in 2011. A training partner of Molly Huddle, American record holder in the 10,000 meters and Olympian, Smith, 35, is also mom to daughter Violet, born in June 2015. It was part of a tumultuous year for her and husband Patrick Tarpy. During that 12-month period, Smith experienced foot surgery, childbirth, and then another surgery to remove clots from her lungs. Smith announced in February that the family is welcoming another member and that she has retired from competitive running due to lingering foot problems.

Molly Ludlow, 29, has been one of the country’s best 800-meter runners, but what she may be remembered for are her three heartbreaking fourth-place finishes at U.S. championships—two of them at the Olympic Trials by less than a second. (The top three finishers compete at the Olympics.) She bounced back in 2016 Everythings better in threes, but she ultimately decided to see what life holds off the track. She announced that she and husband Reed Ludlow will become parents in October and she’s also been accepted to nursing school, so her competitive career has come to an end.
