I am a distance runner with a near obsession with streaks, and that means I deal with a lot of soreness — especially in my legs. GPS running watches have gotten expensive, and frankly, more complicated than most of us will ever use. Fellas, tape your nipples. The best thing I’ve ever found is this medical tape. It stays on all day, but doesn’t sting when you peel it off. I’ve used it every single run for more than a decade.

They won’t slip down during a speedy run, plus they come in subtle, fun designs. The thin fit works great when you have a pair of running shoes that fit just a smidge too small.

I’ve been on the Runner’s World test team for over six years, vetting all kinds of gear, from running shoes and earbuds to dessert beers and pillows. I’ve run over 20 marathons, including Boston, which I’ve run every year since 2013.
I was surprised how taken I was with these running shorts. Usually I prefer bike shorts, but the split leg and 3-inch inseam provides a barely-notice-them comfort. The fabric is lightweight and airy, and I like the banded elastic waistband, which sits just by my navel (not too low, not too high). Minor drawbacks: no drawcord to adjust the waistband and no pockets. Unless you’re wearing a sports bra with pockets, I’d save these for short runs—they’re great for speedwork.

This watch lets me know if I hit my weekly mileage, plays Spotify, and alerts me if I’m straining during my training. Honestly, Garmin—I know I’m overdoing it, but you don’t have to remind me how little sleep I’m getting, how stressed I am, and how much I need to hydrate. But thank you.
