Demong, 34, told NBC Sports he's long wanted to do a marathon. He said he hopes to run 6:00 per mile, which would yield a finish time of 2:37.
Demong's performance at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver made him the first American to win a gold medal in an Olympic Nordic event. At those Games, Demong was also part of the U.S. team that won the silver medal in the large hill 4 x 5K event.
Demong told NBC Sports that, in 2003, he ran a 37K road race in Colorado in 2:17; that's at roughly the same pace he stated as his goal for New York City.
