The Oscar Pistorius murder trial could be headed for a long delay if the former Olympian is forced to undergo an independent psychiatric evaluation, according to a CNN.com report.
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel filed a motion asking Pistorius undergo the evaluation, saying that if there is any chance Pistorius' mental health is an issue, the court must "err on the side of caution," according to the report.
Pistorius, who became the first amputee runner to compete in the Olympics in 2012, is on trial in Pretoria, South Africa, for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on February 14, 2013. He pleaded not guilty to the murder and other gun charges.
Judge Thokozile Masipa will announce her decision Wednesday, according to the report. If Pistorius is order to undergo evaluation it would last 30 days and Pistorius would need to wait for it to be scheduled, which means the trial could be delayed for months.
