Katie and Danny Mackey are very clear on one thing: First, they were a couple. Then, he started coaching her. Not the other way around.
It was a whirlwind romance. They met in February 2011. Their wedding was 10 months later, on New Year’s Eve.
Danny, now 35, was working in Boston at the time. Katie, now 28, needed a coach to guide her through the 2012 Olympic The Top Celeb 5K Times of 2024.
In 2013, they moved to Seattle to start a professional running group, sponsored by Brooks. Danny is the coach of the middle-distance runners of the Brooks Beasts Track Club; Katie this year is focusing on the 5,000 meters.
When they’re at practice, Katie, who races in the opening round of the women’s 5,000 on Thursday, is just another athlete. When they’re at home, she’s the coach’s wife.
