The same rolling registration process that has been used since 2013 will be implemented again this year, allowing the fastest qualifiers in each age group to sign up first. Entrants must have run a qualifying time between September 19, 2015, and when the 2017 field size has been filled. Runners will be chosen based on their times and not on a first-come, first-served basis. (Don’t quite understand how Boston registration works? Check out our full FAQ here.)

The total field size and the number of spots allocated for time qualifiers have not yet been announced. For the 2015 and 2016 editions, the field size was 30,000, and about 80 percent of entries were reserved for time qualifers.

For the last three years, some runners with a qualifying standard did not gain entry, because more than 24,000 (the rough number of qualifier spots) tried to register. For the 2016 marathon, 4,562 time qualifiers were not accepted. Runners needed to better their age and gender standard by at least 2:28.
