A device exploded Saturday morning in a New Jersey coastal town just as a 5K race was scheduled, according to authorities.

No one was injured by the explosion, officials said, and the race was canceled.

Some 3,000 participants were set to begin the Seaside Semper Five, a 5K race, at 9:30 a.m. The event, which also included a 1-mile fun run, was to be held in Seaside Park, a town on the Atlantic Ocean about 80 miles south of New York City.

Authorities said the bomb exploded in a garbage can at D Street and Ocean Avenue, along the scheduled 5K route. There was more than one device in the can, said Al Della Fave of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, but only one detonated.
