Krista DuChene was leading the Canadian Half Marathon Championships on Sunday in Montreal when her leg was "completely taken away from me." DuChene started to feel discomfort in her left leg with about 3.1 miles left in the race, according to a report on thestar.com. Just 500 meters from the finish line, DuChene said, "I couldn't put any weight on it."
DuChene managed to hobble her way across the finish line (video above), finishing third in 1:16:37, three minutes behind winner Rachel Hannah of Toronto.
So what happened to DuChene? According to the report, an undiagnosed stress fracture turned into a full fracture of her femur. She had surgery after the race to repair the break with a plate and three screws.
