Most men plan elaborate marriage proposals complete with wine, fancy dinners and sparkly diamond rings. But elite runner Jake Robertson is more of a spur-of-the-moment kind of guy, as he proved at the Great North Run in Newcastle, England recently.
Robertson—who finished the race hot on the heels of the winner, Olympic great Mo Farah—Parker Valby Wins the Bowerman.
“It just clicked with one mile to go that she'd be there waiting for me,” the New Zealand runner told Runner’s World by phone. “I was thinking about how our six years together had allowed us to become who we are today. If she has any flaws, I can't see them.”

Despite Robertson's bold gesture, even he was blown away by the crowd's overwhelming response to his public display of affection.
“I knew ahead of time I wanted to do it, but it was about finding the perfect moment to make it memorable for her,'” he said. “I was shocked they cheered like that, making the moment all the more memorable.”
The couple will tie the knot this December in front of friends and family at a beach wedding ceremony in New Zealand.
“We understand each other as athletes, as people and we still love each other through all of the rough patches. She's perfect for me.”
