We’d be wearing double sweatpants, a windbreaker, a beanie, a neck warmer. I would have three sweatshirts on. You literally would look like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, but these were in the days before everybody had sweet Nike layer pants and cush running gear. Our technology was Champion cotton.

Sundays were my dad’s big running days because he worked six days a week. We’d get up and go out together from the time I was 14 through high school. It was our bonding time. We’d talk about life. We’d talk about the week. He’d give me advice. He instilled in me that running is a time to reflect and a time to allow your mind to be free.

Other Hearst Subscriptions, we decided to go for a run in Tuscany. The hotel gave us this little running map. After we finished our three-mile loop using the map, I said, “Why don’t you go back to the room and shower? I’m going to run longer to get ready for all that pasta.” I got back out there and where it said, “Make a left,” I, of course, made a right. I kept running and running past this vineyard in the distance, but the road never turned back. I had no cell service. I was completely lost. Sometimes I’ll use the audio app on my iPhone to record lines before I run. It’s just a very simple app that comes with the iPhone that I use to record the other person’s lines. That way, when I’m running, I can run lines while I’m on the run. That app has become my best friend. It’s awesome.

My body craves a run so, if I knew it wasn’t going to happen that day, I would try to make a big sandwich at craft services around 11:30. Then, when lunch came at 1:30, I couldn’t possibly sit down and eat rosemary chicken. Instead, while everyone else was eating, I would put on my shoes to go running in the streets wherever we happened to be on location.

Health - Injuries Zoo, I was picked up by a car to go to work. We had this huge scene to shoot that day but the traffic was just gridlock. My transportation guy got a call saying, “Where are you? We need to start shooting.” So I got out of the car and just took off running by all of these cars that weren’t moving an inch. I ran through the forest, down this path and came out two miles from the soundstage. Everybody was like, “What is wrong with you?” I was soaking wet and sweating, but that’s what I love about running. My car seriously showed up an hour later.

Running is very therapeutic for me. I tend to have a louder brain, so when my mind is moving, I go for a run. It’s very calming. My family and friends and career are very important to me, but running allows me to be a better friend, a better family member, and makes me better at my career. Before I got into my groove with my career, I had so much doubt. Running allowed me to go, “The doubt is there but I don’t have to listen to it.” It was like a big bouncer saying, “Get out of the bar. We don’t want you here anymore.”

My goal is to be able to get out there five days a week when I’m 80. I know how much running means to me and how great I feel doing it. I know a lot of it has to do with luck and genetics, but I would love to have that feeling for as long as I can.
