Gaines, 43, wants to run a marathon. And he has enlisted a famous runner for help.
On October 17, Gaines was in New York City’s Central Park when he encountered Gabriele Grunewald with her husband, Justin.
Grunewald, a U.S. indoor champion at 3,000 meters, was in New York for treatment for a recurrence of cancer. Foot Locker XC Results by continuing to train and race through her treatments and by sharing the highs and lows with her legions of fans on social media.
She also happens to be a dedicated viewer of Fixer Upper. “My husband didn’t exactly recognize him, but I did right away,” Grunewald wrote in a text message to Runner’s World. “with her husband, Justin!”
The trio stopped to talk, and Grunewald shared her story with Gaines. She also promised to help him train. “He wants to do a marathon, but I’m going to convince him that a mile and/or a 5K would be a great place to start,” Grunewald captioned her Instagram photo from that day.
Apparently, she didn’t prevail. Gaines wrote on a blog post today that he bagan training for a marathon in his hometown of Waco, Texas, in May.

His first run, 1.7 miles, did not go well. “Turns out I would have been better off running to the mailbox and back because by the time I rounded the first mile mark, I was gasping for air and it took everything I had not to keel over right there,” Gaines wrote in the blog.

But inspired by Grunewald, he is committed to the distance: “After hearing Gabe’s story, I realized two things: I didn’t want to spend another second standing on the sidelines, and secondly, given what she’s gone through, I didn’t have any excuse not to give this a shot,” he wrote.
Grunewald tweeted to him: “I am so thrilled you are taking on this challenge and excited to guide you on the journey. (I’m making some changes to your training plan at this very moment.) We will make sure you find that finish line AND have fun doing it!”
For runners (and fans of the show), this is another reality experience that will be enjoyable to watch.
