No doubt about it, Shelby Houlihan’s outdoor track campaign this summer is pure entertainment for her fans and probably a bit startling for her competitors. On Saturday in Belgium, she set the American record in the 5,000 meters, finishing first in 14:34.45.

Houlihan, 25, who competed in 5,000 meters at the Rio Olympics (11th), was paced to the fastest time in U.S. history by Shalane Flanagan, another Bowerman Track Club teammate, and Cory McGee, who is a member of Team New Balance Boston.
The previous American record, set by Shannon Rowbury in 2016, was 14:38.92. On Saturday, Houlihan cut 26 seconds from her personal best of 15:00.37, which she ran at the 2017 world championships.
Houlihan wowed spectators at the U.S. national championships in June, where she won the 1500 meters and the 5,000 meters. She clocked a 57.67 in her final lap of the 1500-meter race and unleashed a furious final 100 meters at the end of the 5K to take the national title. From there, Houlihan has won two Diamond League 1500-meter races at the Prefontaine Classic and in Lausanne, where she finished in 3:57.54, the fourth-fastest time in U.S. history.

Schweizer, 22, also announced that she has joined the Bowerman Track Club following her final season of competition at the University of Missouri, where she was the 2016 NCAA cross-country champion and also won five other national indoor and outdoor track titles.
