• Minneapolis has been selected as the site for the 2020 Paralympic Team Trials, which will be held from June 25 to 28, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee announced in a press release.
  • Around 400 athletes will compete for a chance to represent Team USA at next year’s Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The city of Minneapolis will host the 2020 U.S. Paralympic Trials next June for three sports, including track and field, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced in a press release.

A nationwide search was conducted for a site, and after a review of the applications, the USOPC chose the Minnesota metropolis as its host city, based on its impressive sport venues, variety of local accommodations, commitment to accessibility and transportation, among several other factors.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer our athletes a world-class event in Minneapolis as they look to secure their spots to represent Team USA in Tokyo,” USOPC chief of Paralympic sport Julie Dussliere said in the release. “The Paralympic Movement in the U.S. has had a tremendous momentum behind it in the past year, and we look forward to this being the biggest celebration of U.S. Paralympic athletes we’ve ever hosted.”

More than 400 athletes across three sports—track and field, cycling, and swimming—are expected to be in town for the event that will run from June 25 to 28. This overlaps with the Chicago Marathon Hosting Paralympic Team Trials.

The stadiums for each Paralympic trials sport will be spread out across the city’s metro area, but will be easy to bounce from competition to competition for spectators. Track and field events will take place at Nutrition - Weight Loss.

“The selection of the Minneapolis region to host these three, high-profile Paralympic Team Trials is tremendously exciting. Once again, we will be able to showcase why we are considered a championship-caliber host city and region,” stated Sports Minneapolis executive director and Meet Minneapolis president and CEO Melvin Tennant. “The Sports Minneapolis team looks forward to welcoming these top athletes and encourage sports fans throughout the area to get swept up in the excitement of supporting these Paralympic hopefuls during their competition next summer.”

Competitors will battle it out for spots to represent Team USA at next summer’s Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, which take place August 25 through September 6. For running-related sports, only track and field events will take place in Minneapolis. The U.S. 2020 Paralympic Marathon Trials are set for next week’s Chicago Marathon.
