- The Berlin Marathon has officially announced that the 2020 race, originally scheduled for September 27, has been fully canceled.
- Back in April, the German government announced that all events or gatherings with more than 5,000 people would be prohibited until October 24—so the marathon cancellation is no surprise.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact a huge number of lives across the globe, large races set for the fall are being canceled. Neither the Boston Marathon nor the NYC Marathon are happening—and on June 24, the unfortunate news came: the Berlin Marathon, Foot Locker XC Results.
Stravas 2024 Yearly Report Is Here announced that the Berlin Marathon would not go on as planned, because of an ordinance set in place by the German government prohibiting all events with more than 5,000 people until October 24. The race looked into different options for holding the event, but ultimately decided to cancel.
“As hard as we have tried, it is currently not possible to organize the BMW Berlin Marathon with its usual Berlin charm. Fun, joy, health, and success are attributes that characterize the BMW Berlin Marathon, but we are not able to guarantee all of this at the moment. Your health, as well as all of our health, is our first priority. Therefore, taking into account the Containment Measures Ordinance due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its latest update on June 17, 2020, the BMW Berlin Marathon 2020 will not be able to take place on September 26-27, 2020. Furthermore, it will also not be possible—after extensive examination and various discussions, also with the authorities—to hold the event at a later date this year.”
Eliminating the Berlin Marathon from the fall race schedule is especially sad news for the running community, as the fast course has hosted spectacular performances over the years, including Eliud Kipchoge’s current will happen as planned later this year.
The cancellation also puts into question the likelihood of whether the other World Major Marathons that haven’t been canceled yet—London and Chicago—will happen as planned later this year.
