The 2020 New York City Marathon, the world’s largest marathon, has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. This decision was jointly made by New York Road Runners, which organizes the race, and the New York City Mayor’s Office.
“While the marathon is an iconic and beloved event in our city, I applaud New York Road Runners for putting the health and safety of both spectators and runners first,” New York City mayor Bill de Blasio said in a release. “We look forward to hosting the 50th running of the marathon in November of 2021.”
In response to the cancellation, NYRR said it is still ironing out the details regarding refunds or deferments. According to the press release, runners will have the option for a full refund or to defer their entry to the 2021, ’22, or ’23 races. More details are expected from NYRR by July 15, which will be communicated immediately with runners.
Charity bib runners are asked to reach out to their respective charities starting on July 1 for more information on how the charities will handle their bib allotments.
“Canceling this year’s TCS New York City Marathon is incredibly disappointing for everyone involved, but it was clearly the course we needed to follow from a health and safety perspective,” Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of NYRR, said in a release. “Marathon Day and the many related events and activities during race week are part of the heart and soul of New York City and the global running community, and we look forward to coming together next year.”
NYRR said they will host a virtual marathon, which runners can complete between October 17 and November 1. More details will be shared in July.

Boston was initially postponed from April to September before being canceled in May, and the Berlin Marathon was canceled in April.
