The 24-year-old, who won bronze in the 1500 meters at the world championships in 2019, bested the previous mark—3:55.17 by Genzebe Dibaba in 2014— by two seconds, finishing with a time of 3:53.09. Great Britain’s Laura Muir finished second in 3:59.58, a British indoor record, and compatriot Melissa Courtney-Bryant crossed third in 4:04.79.

In addition to Tsegay’s record, two other records nearly fell at the World Indoor Tour meet. Ethiopian Getnet Wale came within .31 seconds of the indoor 3000-meter record that has stood since 1998. His 7:24:98 is the four the fastest time ever recorded in history, indoor and outdoor. Only Daniel Komen and Hicham El Guerrouj have times ahead of him.

American Grant Holloway also came within striking distance—specifically, .02 seconds—of the 60-meter hurdles world record set by Colin Jackson in 1994. His 7.32 seconds broke his own American record of 7.35, which he first ran on March 9, 2019, and tied on January 24, 2021.
