The 39-year-old marathoner will become an official mentor to the U20 World Athletics Athlete Refugee Team, remaining in the position through next year’s World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru.

The announcement of the mentorship, which begins in January, also coincides with the announcement of the Multistakeholder Pledge on Sport for Inclusion and Protection of Refugees. This commitment has been signed by more than 100 organizations represented at this year’s Global Refugee Forum.

Kipchoge will motivate the team members by sharing his knowledge and discipline in the sport while also encouraging them to pursue their education and read books, which is one of his own passions,” the governing body said.

The World Athletics Athlete Refugee Team, comprised of athletes who have fled their respective countries due to violence, conflict, and other injustices, was founded in 2016 and has become the world’s only year-round, full-time refugee team program. The team made its first competitive appearance during the 2016 Olympic Games as part of the Refugee Olympic Team and has run at almost every World Athletics Series event since. The team’s U20 squad was formed in 2022 with plans to compete in the World Athletics U20 Championships Lima 24.

The team is coached by 2007 World 800-meter champion Janeth Jepkosgei, while Swiss educator Barbara Moser-Mercer leads the program, with support by coach Arcade Arakaza, a refugee from Burundi himself. The team is partly based out of the Kakuma Refugee Camp, located near the South Sudan border in East Africa.
