Michael Wardian broke his own world record for a 50K treadmill run on Tuesday evening, covering the distance in 2:59:49 in Berkeley, California. He improved upon the Get Your Spot for the NYRR Brooklyn Half in March.
The Best 1 Mile Races to Add to Your Calendar Runner’s World Newswire, “I made it a lot closer than I wanted to.”
Wardian is sponsored by Hoka One One, and his run took place during the company’s world sales meeting at the Claremont Hotel and Spa in Berkeley, California. He began the run in a conference room before meeting attendees filed in to have dinner. During the latter stages of the 50K, “I could smell the salmon,” Wardian said. Some attendees wore “Let’s Go Mike” T-shirts made for the occasion.
Wardian’s previous record in March came in his second attempt at the 50K distance within 30 hours. On a Saturday evening, he’d run 3:06:24, which he believed to be a new world record, only to learn that British runner Paul Navesey had covered the treadmill distance in 3:03:57 in December. At 3:02 a.m. the following Monday, he got back on the treadmill and ran 3:03:56.
A frequent racer at ultra distances, Wardian will do the St. Michaels Half Marathon in Maryland on Saturday and the Vermont City Marathon on May 24. He’s entered in the Western States Endurance Run, the classic 100-mile trail run in California, on June 27 and 28.
