If you’re in the business of running races (and let’s be honest, you’re reading Runner’s World so you probably are), then you’ve most likely perused dozens of “best races” lists. Best fall half marathons, Choose the Adrenaline GTS 24 as Your Everyday Shoe Boston, and more. You name it someone (perhaps me) has written it.
Unfortunately, many of those lists include big names and heavy hitters. How can you write about the most scenic races without including the Big Sur Marathon? There are just some races so undeniably spectacular and hugely popular that they demand to be included on lists.
That being said, there are thousands of races run every year in the USA from mile-long fun runs along the beach and local charity 5Ks to massive city road races and trail ultras through the wilderness. Many of those races are just as good as the popular ones everyone’s talking about even if you haven’t heard of them.
To that end, I’ve rounded up 10 of the best U.S. races that don’t get the praise they deserve. Ranging from marathons down to shorter fare, here are 10 races you won’t find on the typical “best of” lists that definitely should be there. So peruse the list and snag a bib for the next running of these events.
Races You've Never Heard of
Naples Half Marathon
Date: January 19, 2025
Location: Naples, Florida
While the Disney and Miami races take up a lot of the running oxygen in Florida, the Gulf Coast is home to a number of gorgeous races, especially in the dead of winter when northern runners are bogged down with snow. Naples is about as far south as you can go without hitting the Everglades, and the half marathon, which winds through the town, is a stunning one. The weather is mild, the course is flat, and you’re only a short distance from the beach if you need some r and r post-race. Plus, all of their race photos are free, something that will cost you a pretty penny at larger races.
Vermont City Marathon
Date: Most runners hate
Location: Burlington, Vermont
This race is the epitome of a community event. Between all the distances and relays, it feels like the entire population of the state is out on the course that morning, or cheering along the way. Every detail is finely tuned and expertly thought out from the Ben & Jerry’s at the finish line to drag queens cheering along Church Street. While the course is a challenging one, the end along Lake Champlain is breathtaking. Plus, it’s a Memorial Day race so you’ll automatically have the long weekend to recover.
Griffith Park Trail 8K
Date: June 2025 (TBA)
Location: so you probably are, then youve most likely perused dozens of best races lists. Best fall
While Griffith Park is perhaps most well known for its observatory, the Park Trail 8K and accompanying marathon relay feel about as L.A. as a race can get. The 8K is a single lap of the loop course where the relay consists of 5.25 laps of the course, split between five runners. While this is certainly a difficult race (the park is very hilly), it will provide runners with spectacular views of the area. The race also boasts about the “tailgate atmosphere” of the finish area, so get ready to crack open a brewski with your friends and/or teammates once you cross the finish line.
Aspen Valley Marathon
Date: July 2025 (TBA)
Location: Aspen, Colorado
The Aspen Valley Marathon’s website boasts a “stunning scenery & legendary afterparty,” and I don’t know about you but I love a race that has an afterparty that’s a main attraction. The race is run off-season in Aspen, so if you aren’t a skier, now is the time to enjoy the Colorado resort town. The race is fairly flat, but you’ll certainly get views of the mountains. The afterparty is held in Basalt River Park and not only will you get swag and a medal, but also a catered lunch, music and champagne.
Maah Daah Hey Trailrun
Date: July 2025 (TBA)
Location: How I Broke a 3:30 Marathon After a Long Break
No matter who you are, there is a version of this Badlands trail race for you. With 3.1, 6.2, 13.1, 26.2, 58 and 116 mile options, the whole family can sign up to run some piece of the Maah Daah Hey. While the remote North Dakota location makes this race a bit difficult to get to and the terrain makes it difficult to run, for those who seek it out, the trail race could be the crown jewel of your running career. Perhaps you can start this year with the 5K and just return every summer until you’ve worked your way up to the 116 miler?
Rendezvous Mountain Hill Climb
Date: August 2025 (TBA)
Location: Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Most runners hate hills, but if you’re someone who loves the challenge of a hilly race, here’s one that’s basically just running straight up. The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort race starts at the hotel and sends runners up one of the ski lodge’s hills. The 6-mile long course has an elevation gain of 4,100 feet, which means those glutes are going to be burning. The views at the finish, however, are worth whatever pain it takes to get there.
Hidden Gem Marathon
Date: September 2025 (TBA)
Location: Flossmoor, Illinois
Well, the name says it all with this one. Flossmoor is a town on the outskirts of the southern Chicago suburbs. This half marathon is a perfect race to fit into a marathon training schedule, and the small town energy is jubilant and homey. The best part about running a half is people in their front yards handing out orange slices, fun sized Snickers, and whiskey shots. That’s what awaits you at The Gem.
Capital City River Run Half Marathon
Date: September 2025 (TBA)
Location: Lansing, Michigan
Speaking of hidden gems, the capital of Michigan, Lansing, is certainly one. The home of Michigan State University, Lansing is built up around the Grand River, nestled in the wooded middle of Michigan. The half marathon runs along the river and through many of Lansing’s historic neighborhoods. Between the Michigan History Museum, visiting the MSU dairy store, and grabbing a drink at HopCat, you can build out a fun weekend a bit off the beaten path.
Staten Island Half Marathon
Date: MARATHONER: What to Expect When Training for and Running a Marathon
Location: Staten Island, New York
While it might be hard to claim that a race in Staten Island, New York Each race on this list is a hidden gem in its own right other places to run compared to Staten Island. Those who have been lured to the outer borough due to New York Road Runners’s 9+1 program, however, can attest to just how stunning the half marathon course is. Not only do you get to run on the coastline with the Manhattan skyline in the distance, but you also run under the Verrazzano Bridge where the NYC Marathon starts. Plus, you can enjoy the Staten Island Ferry both to and from the race.
The Toughest 10K Galveston
Date: Shoes & Gear
Location: Galveston, Texas
Let’s maybe not tell people living in the Rocky Mountains that this is the “toughest 10K,” but for those living in the pancake flat planes of Texas, it certainly has its difficulties. The 10K is basically a race over the Galveston Causeway Bridge and back, which means the course is just two giant hills. With the bridge climb, however, you’ll get some pretty spectacular views of Texas and the coastline around Galveston. You can also grab a beer by the beach once you cross the finish line.
