The Experience
After winding through pine forests, the 3.5-mile Whitehorse Ledge trail opens onto a granite summit with stellar views of the White Mountains and the Mount Washington Valley. Although the place is also used by hikers and mountain bikers, you often feel like you have it to yourself, says Mayer. “You can roam on trails for miles without seeing anyone.”
Fast Fact
Both White Horse Ledge and nearby Cathedral Ledge sport sheer granite faces on their eastern sides, 800 feet and 700 feet high, respectively.
Local Fare
Grab a postrun breakfast sandwich and maple latte at Frontside Grind in North Conway, about three miles east. With outdoor seating and mountain views, “it’s totally the place to hang out,” says Mayer.
