The Experience
With a little more than 20 miles of trails shaded by oaks and pitch pines, Devil’s Den Preserve is the perfect location for a fall run. “It’s hilly and you have to watch your step,” says Koleszar. “But the leaves inspire you.” The Laurel Trail leads to Godfrey Pond, located at the site of an old sawmill that operated from the time of the American Revolution until about 1865.

Local Legend
Back when the mill was open, workers saw what they thought was the devil’s footprint burned on a rock. (It was an impressed cloven hoofprint.) The land, which is formally named Lucius Pond Ordway, was thereafter called Devil’s Den.

Fine Fare
Cozy up by the fireplace at Ridgefield’s Little Pub, just five miles up the road. The eggplant wrap is a must-have, says Kolezsar.
