I’ll just run during my daughter’s soccer practice. Easy and productive! When it was time to get her ready to go, my husband was already being productive fixing our dryer. No way I was going to mess with that, so I gamely geared up to push my youngest in the jogging stroller. Not as easy, but completely doable and still productive. And that’s when my son decided he wanted in on the action.
The more the merrier, I reasoned, and away the four of us went. Soccer ball (check); jogging stroller (check); son’s bike (check); air pumped in tires (check). Heck, we were even two minutes early to the field. Once the coach’s whistle blew, we were off. The short trek to the park path was a breeze and I was ready to give this system a gold star.

My son saw his school bus and needed to stop and check it out. Then, not five minutes in, he wanted to stop for a snack (he’d proudly packed his own snack bag). I circled him each time and prepared myself for just two miles. But then the real trouble set in: Fatigue—his legs and my patience. (This picture shows him abandoning ship after the third bump (mountain, to him) in the path.)
It was at this point that I decided to draw from the wisdom of the Mind and Body section that I edit: Be flexible with both training and goals. So I helped him back onto his bike and steered us back to the soccer field.
Total training miles for Saturday: a whopping one-half mile. Training lesson learned: huge—never sleep in.
