A little over a year ago, I was on high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and adult onset diabetes medications. I weighed 320 pounds at 5-foot-8 and almost 50 with a family history of heart disease. Both my parents passed away at the age of 68. That was less than 20 years away for me, and I love my life. I wanted more.
She Raced 18 Horses in an Ultramarathonand Won and encouraged exercise. I stuck to the diet plan. I ate better. I ate less. I cut carbs and fast food. On July 11, 2017, exercise became part of my new routine. I walked a mile or so most days. On September 2, 2017, I committed to at least a #5kEveryDay. When I started, I was walking them. And I was sure I’d never run. I even posted silly walk pictures on social media, but I built up to running. A little here and there during those daily 5Ks.
On February 2, 2018, I ran the whole 5K for the first time. If you can do it once, you can do it every day. And I’ve run a whole 5K each since. This morning (June 18) I did a 5K in under 28 minutes, and I weighed in just under 200 pounds. I’ve gone from a 56-inch waist to a 38-inch waist and from 5X shirts to XL. I don’t have a number goal really for weight. But for my height I should be around 165 pounds, so I’ve still got work to do.
I have had people I’ve known for years but haven’t seen in awhile not recognize me. I love that. I love the way I feel, the way clothes fit, and being able to shop in regular clothing stores. Mostly I stay motivated for the years, days, hours and minutes I’m hopefully putting on the end of my life. I’ve got two adult daughters and amazing wife, and I want to be here with them for as long as possible.
Moving forward on this weight loss journey, I’ve found hiking and trail running to be a blast and love the adventure of new places. We recently went to Utah on a whim after winning a charity silent auction for airfare for two. A year ago I would not have hiked 10-plus miles after running my morning 5K. (Utah is stunning by the way.)
I’ve committed to running the Leadville Heavy Half in 2019. While I run at least a 5K every day, the extra miles don’t scare me. The altitude and uphill part do. I’ve got a year to train. This is going to be awesome.
I’m just a regular guy. I wish it didn’t take me this long in life to get to this point. So if you are reading this and if you think you can’t, I couldn’t either, but I did and continue to do.
