On December 1, the 15th annual Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) took place at the Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, Oregon. As one of the top high school cross-country events in the nation, the event brings in 22 high profile teams of seven runners and an additional 50 individuals (male and female). The squads compete for the Winged Goddess of Victory statue.

While the event provides gifted athletes a chance to see who the best is—like two-time champion Katelyn Tuohy or Liam Anderson on the boys side—it’s also an opportunity for teams to come together and lay it all on the line. Runner’s World captured the scenes that show the sweat, grit, and camaraderie that make NXN an event high school runners strive to run at.
