When I was in high school, I was known for a few things: getting involved in every theater production, singing in the TartanTones (the school choir), and being the first person at lacrosse practice. Initially, my coach was impressed with my eagerness, but soon she realized the real reason for my punctuality: I would get there early to put on all my goalie equipment, which then couldn’t possibly be taken off in time for me to run the pre-practice mile. Usually, it’s when I need to get up before the sun for a training run, when the air is cold and the bed is warm, or when my shins are screaming at me because I know I am supposed to stretch before and after runs but sometimes just can’t find the time.
Those days make me realize that 16-year-old me was on to something. It’s okay to hate running, or least some things about it, or at least sometimes—because if you love it enough to keep on doing it, it’s not always going to be fun.
