We all have complex relationships with running. Some people love it from the first step, some grow to love it the more they run, and some go through phases of loving and hating it. Runner’s World+ member Luke Carron would describe his relationship with running as that of a best friend. And like most best friends, you have highs and lows with them.
Luke wasn’t always interested in running, but after moving to New York in 2014 he decided to give it a shot. It was after competing in his first half marathon that he decided to take running to the next level, running marathon after marathon year after year.
It was in 2022 when he and his partner welcomed their second child. But, tragically, nine days after bringing him home, the baby unexpectedly passed. The tragedy sent Luke in a downward spiral that he was fighting to get out of. “
I wasn’t showing up for my son, I wasn’t showing up for my husband, I wasn’t showing up for myself,” Luke says. “There was one day I thought ‘I can’t do this anymore. I need to get help.’” This spurred him to get treatment at a facility in Connecticut where he rediscovered running.
He was 100 pounds heavier and didn’t believe he would ever be able to find his way back to where he once was. But step-by-step, he persisted, determined to bring himself back. It wasn’t an easy road but help from those close to him and his reacquainted best friend helped remind Luke that you have to just keep moving.

Luke finally felt himself coming back to his roots, but he is far from stopping and looking forward to the future PRs to come.
