Runner’s World Review
The only change in the Superior, which won our Editor’s Choice award last spring, is a more durable upper. Some testers noted slippage around the heel in this version and others found the length short for their size. But many testers loved the “socklike” fit that molded to the shape of their feet, and they praised the light, flexible, and well-cushioned ride with Altra’s signature no heel-toe drop. “The shoe provided enough stability that my feet weren't hurting midrun or when running over rocks or gravel, but not so much that it felt oversupportive,” said Leah Polakoff of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

We put each shoe through real-world usage and a battery of mechanical tests in our lab to provide you with objective — and exclusive — data. In addition to a shoe's weight, we measure sole thickness (everything that sits between your foot and the road), how well the foam cushions your stride, and the flexibility of the forefoot. All this is taken into account in our reviews of each shoe.
