Runner’s World Review
The folks at Montrail willingly sacrificed weight to provide exceptional traction, protection, and support when they created the Trans Alps. The outsole impresses first; it’s made of solid rubber with deep, clawlike lugs. Above that are a firm, stable midsole and a rugged upper that can fend off all sorts of trail debris. Testers noticed how heavy the shoes were but gave them high marks for tackling tough terrain. “This shoe is great on any nasty trail,” said Daniel Schaeffer of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania.

We put each shoe through real-world usage and a battery of mechanical tests in our lab to provide you with objective — and exclusive — data. In addition to a shoe's weight, we measure sole thickness (everything that sits between your foot and the road), how well the foam cushions your stride, and the flexibility of the forefoot. All this is taken into account in our reviews of each shoe.
