When it comes to women’s running gear, gone are the days of male-led 'shrink it and pink it' designs, making way for performance-ready styles that bridge the gap between fashion and function.

One brand that's big on blending the two is FP Movement, a category of Free People that has been redefining activewear since 2012. And that’s showcased in its latest campaign, ‘Stand Out, Never Still’, which encourages you to move away from the monotone black leggings (guilty) and make a statement in bright, bold and daring activewear.

With the weather finally heating up, we’ve been putting some of FP Movement’s latest pieces to the test (including the TikTok viral Get Your Flirt On running shorts). best womens running shoes shop the full collection here.

Light As Air Run Shorts

Light As Air Run Shorts

Comfortable, with a built-in pant liner, these high-waist shorts holds you in throughout your run, while the relaxed fit lives up to its promise of feeling light and airy. At 5'9, our tester initially thought these may come up too short, but they were the perfect anti-chafe, box-short length, with the brief liner providing added security. There's secure stash pockets on each side for gels, and a larger zipped pocket on the front (unusually, instead of the back), which is big enough to hold a smartphone. They run true to size, too – so don't size up or size down – and there's eight different colourways, ranging from muted pastels to vibrant statements.

Motivation Muscle Tank

Motivation Muscle Tank

Wonderfully soft and stylish, you almost wouldn’t think that this tank was designed for exercise – but it is, and it works a treat. The fit is naturally loose but not baggy, with oversized armholes and a keyhole neckline, meaning you can get in a full range of motion and keep cool while exercising. Our tester wore this for a home workout involving upper body sets, and enjoyed the breathable, barely-there feel of this tank as she got a sweat on. Although it might not be your best choice for those really long runs, it’s a great item to wear for shorter runs in warmer weather, and for sessions in the gym or at home.

Get Your Flirts On Shorts

With 20 colourways to choose from, you can truly stock up on – and never get bored of – these light, floaty shorts. The elastic waistband and built-in briefs keep you snug and secure, while the flowy material gives your legs the freedom to move in whatever way they wish. For such a dainty and comfortable pair of shorts they are also surprisingly durable, built from reinforced fabric that is water-resistant and more resilient against tearing and ripping. The side pockets are also a handy touch, although they are quite loose and have no fastenings – so we wouldn’t entrust them with a phone or keys when running or doing any other intense exercise.

Movement Wave Crew Socks

The unsung hero of many sports is the sock – and whether you’re running, walking or working out at the gym, it’s important to stock up on some comfortable pairs that won’t take you on a path to blisters. Thankfully, these crew socks are a great fit – quite literally – with a ribbed ankle and extra support around the arch, not to mention some fun but sophisticated colourful details. They do slip a bit, though, so aren’t the best choice for runs or workouts where you’ll be on your feet for hours.

Playin' For Keeps Layer

Playin' For Keeps Layer

Let's face it, British weather can be pretty unreliable, so if you're in the market for a light and breathable cover up, FP Movement's Playin' For Keeps Layer will impress. Sweat-wicking and body hugging, this is one of the most flattering running layers we've tested, contoured with a scoop bottom seam that sits just above the waist and scrunched panelling on the sides. The fabric feels luxuriously soft and stretchy, while gently compressing the torso. The hood is a nice touch, too. Just note: we'd recommend sizing up as it does run on the small side.
