Many of us run with our phones — whether for mapping, tracking miles and time, streaming podcasts and music, or for safety reasons — but who wants to actually think about their phone while running? Shorts with pockets can help, but if your favourite getup doesn’t have room for your phone, an armband for running is a great solution.

Usually strapped to your arm, you’ll be able to listen to music, podcasts, and have the ability to snap an Instagram-worthy shot when the moment strikes.

Prefer to keep your arm phone-free? We've also tested the Runners World Gear Awards 2024, hydration vests and chest holders at RW, so there's plenty of options for storing your phone securely while you pound the pavements.

The best phone holders for running

What to look for in a phone armband for running

Easy access headphone ports: There's nothing worse than a phone armband being too tight or too loose and moving as you run. Look for a running armband with an adjustable strap, allowing you to fasten your phone securely to your arm as you move.

Weather-proof protection: If you're planning on using your armband in all weathers, it's a good idea to invest in one with a protective screen that'll stop your phone from getting too wet on rainy runs.

Touch-screen: The chances are, you'll still want to skip songs or even answer the phone as you run. Look for an armband that still allows you to use your phone on the move, or you'll find yourself stopping to remove it mid-run.

    Cons
    • Slightly small for larger phones

Some armband touch screens are so thick it’s difficult to actually use the phone controls through them, but no such trouble here; the touch-screen sheath works really well. There's also an easy access headphone ports and reflective trim to add a touch more visibility.

Running at night? Proviz' running arm pocket comes in reflective black, yellow, pink and blue options, to help increase your visibility. There's enough room to store small personal items in the band, along with your phone, including keys and a card. We do find it runs slightly smaller though, so would recommend sizing up.

    Running Armband for iPhone

    Running Armband for iPhone
    Pros
    • Super affordable
    • An adjustable strap
    Cons
    • Touch screen isn't the easiest to use

This is a cheap and cheerful armband that does exactly what it says on the tin. There's a small pocket for your keys, an adjustable armband and a port for your headphones. The screen is sensitive enough to let use your phone on-the-move and will protect your phone from rain showers. It might not last forever, but if you're new to running, this is a good option for around £10.

    Pros
    • Secure hook-and-loop closure on pocket
    • Lightweight
    Cons
    • Pricey for what you get

Big enough to fit most modern smartphones, this armband is designed to be lightweight and distraction free on the run. The clear window is protective against the elements and thin enough to allow you to skip to the next track as you move. The arm strap is also adjustable to fit most runners.

Lululemon Fast and Free Running Armband
    Pros
    • Best winter running gear
    • Band is secure without pinching
    • Machine washable
    Cons
    • On Cloudrunner 2: Mild stability for daily miles

With an adjustable arm band and double hook closure, this chic armband designed to stay put as you run, walk, and move. The mesh pocket provides touch-screen ability while keeping it in place to switch songs, check mileage, or even send a quick text.

If you go running late at night, you’ll appreciate the reflective details that make it easier for cars to see you. Once you’ve used it a few times, toss it in the washing machine to get rid of the unwanted sweat and odour so it looks and smells brand new for your next run.

    6

    Armpocket Racer Edge Armband

    Armpocket Racer Edge Armband
    Pros
    • An adjustable strap
    • Doesn't slide or shift
    • Comes in multiple strap sizes
    Cons
    • Not compatible with biggest iPhone

One of our favorite features of Armpocket’s bands is the sheer power of the Velcro on its bicep strap. Not to overstate the situation, but we would trust one or two of these Velcro armbands to hold us to the side of a cliff. This is some powerful stuff — once the band is on your arm, that sucker is not going anywhere.

For runners who don’t have a lot to carry, the Racer Plus is a top pick, thanks to its durable, shift-free design that fits phones up to 6.3 inches—as well as multiple Samsung and Google device models—plus cash and an ID. (That means if you have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, you’ll need another option.)

You won’t get any extra storage here, but what you will get is a light, comfortable, sweat-resistant band that holds fast to your arm like your life depends on it.

RevereSport Running Armband with Extra Pockets

RevereSport Running Armband with Extra Pockets
    Pros
    • Night reflective
    • Additional pocket
    • Waterproof
    Cons
    • Touch screen isnt the easiest to use

Unlike other running armbands, this one features a larger pocket that can fit multiple keys and even a key fob for safe keeping.

You’ll find an adjustable armband to position it in a comfortable spot on your upper arm for the duration of your run. If it happens to rain while you're out, its waterproof coating will keep your device protected and intact.

The best benefit is that this one is uniquely compatible with Apple’s biggest iPhones, including the 12 Pro Max, 13 Pro Max, 14 Pro Max, and 14 Plus — but it’s too big for smaller ones, so if you have an older version or an Android, your phone won’t fit snugly.
