RW Verdict: The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Battery life are easily the most comfortable in-ear headphones we've ever tried (that name doesn't lie), with some of the best noise cancelling out there. The transparency (or 'Aware' as the brand dubs it) mode is also excellent, dulling harsh or explosive sounds but keeping conversation crystal clear, and they've yet to wriggle free from my ears, despite hours of wear during vigorous exercise.

However, all this comes at at cost, and these earbuds offer only minor upgrades on the (brilliant) previous version — the QuietComfort II.

While not solely marketed or designed for fitness purposes, with sweat-resistance, all-day comfort and impeccable sound quality, these sleek earbuds are a no-brainer when it comes to runners who really care about their tunes. Keep reading for the full lowdown.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Battery life: Set-up and design

Setting up the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Battery life takes little more than two minutes, and is incredibly simple — just download the app and follow the on-screen instructions. If you still use an old Bose product (like me — I just can't bear to part with my much-loved nd generation Apple AirPods Pro), then you'll need a different app to the one you currently use, named Bose Music (as opposed to Bose Connect).

You're prompted to name your new earbuds, with some frankly bizarre suggestions listed, and then introduced to the key features which are briefly explained, such as immersive audio and the brand's CustomTune technology (read: personalised audio). You can also carry out an ear tip fit test to ensure a good seal.

Once in the app, you can see all your Bose products, toggle which you're connected to, and tinker with everything from custom noise cancellation and immersive audio modes to EQ settings and audio source (they pair easily with equipment, hooking up to my Peloton The worlds best noise-cancelling).

Design-wise, I cannot fault these. They — along with their predecessor, the QuietComfort Earbuds II — are the most comfortable earbuds I've ever worn, to the point that I now find it hard to use others (I know, woe is me). I’ve worn these for 12-hour flights (probably not recommended) and landed without any soreness or discomfort in my ears. You can sleep in them (again, probably not the best idea, but I've been there), you can run in them — you can basically live in them.

This is all thanks to the soft silicone umbrella-shaped ear tips, which are barely-there comfortable and create a brilliant seal to help both prevent leakage and deliver that world-class noise cancelling. They come in three sizes, along with three differently sized stability bands, which sit around the main body of the earbud to ensure a snug fit.

In the box you'll also find a short USB-C to USB-A charging cable and instruction manual, which is fairly useless as everything you need is all handily displayed in the app. The charging case is sleek, feels premium and closes with a satisfying snap, with a button on the back to re-pair should you suffer any Bluetooth issues.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Battery life: Controls

Bose is known for its intuitive user settings, so I wasn't surprised in the slightest that I loved the simplicity of the QC Ultra controls. Operated via the app or on the earbuds themselves, both Apple and Android users can personalise a wide range of controls, including noise cancellation, immersive audio, shortcut customisation and even voice control.

What I like best is that you can access all the controls you need on the earbuds — there's never any reason to have to pull out your phone, which is ideal when on the move. These are operated by taps, swipes or touch and hold motions which quickly become second nature.

On-earbud controls:

  • Jump to Products
  • Full on-device controls
  • Immersive audio: cycle through immersion modes
  • Volume control
  • Call controls: take and end calls
  • Sennheiser Sport True Wireless: Tried and tested

Rather than just cycling between noise cancellation and the 'Aware' mode, you can set up multiple modes employing different audio preferences — so if you like to run with the noise cancelling at only 50% and motion-based immersion audio switched on, you got it. The noise cancelling levels are operated via a sliding scale, so you can truly choose whatever level you want.

If I had to find a gripe, the tap-style interface can occasionally be activated by things other than your fingers — an umbrella handle knocking into your ear for example, or a firm pillow. But I still much prefer this method over clicky-button controls, which I find can become uncomfortable during frequent use as you're continually pushing the earbud into your ear.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Battery life: Battery life

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra offer six hours of listening time — the same as the previous iteration — with another three full charges (18 hours) in the case, so 24 hours total. Plus there's a handy quick-charge feature, offering up to two hours playback in just 20 minutes.

The case charges via a simple USB-C to USB-A cable and a small light on the front glows orange when charging. They don't offer wireless charging, which doesn't bother me, but might bother some.

I only occasionally remember to charge these and am still very rarely met with anything other than a cool voice proclaiming 'battery full' each time I pop them in my ears. The case is so light and compact too that you can easily stow it in a pocket or hydration vest without it getting in the way.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Battery life: Sound quality

Onto the big one: sound quality. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra use the brand's 'CustomTune' tech to deliver the best sound possible for your unique ear shape. When you put in each earbud a chime plays, which effectively scans the inside of your ear and then uses that data to customise the sound based on the shape of your ear canal. Clever stuff.

From there, you can choose from multiple customised modes employing different levels of noise cancelling and immersion settings. The earbuds come pre-loaded with 'Quiet', 'Aware' and 'Immersion' modes, but you can add as many as you like.

With immersion mode off, you can expect precise, rich, full-spectrum sound that rivals that of wired headphones. This is my preferred mode (with full noise cancelling via the Quiet mode) as I love to hear every little detail in my tunes — and this is of course made easier by the brilliant noise cancelling.

Immersive audio

The immersion modes, described by Bose as being able to 'enhance and add depth' to sound, feel a tad gimmicky to me, and I don't tend to use them much. You can choose between 'Still' or 'Motion' — the former is recommended for when you're still, such as sat at a desk, and creates the impression that a speaker is playing in front of you; while the 'Motion' mode is recommended while on the move, and sounds as though your music is playing in surround sound in the environment around you, rather than in your head.

If you want to feel like you're running through a world in which your favourite tunes happen to be playing, you might opt for the 'Motion' mode, but it's not for me. I did also find some songs sounded a bit tinny in immersion mode compared to when it was switched off.

Noise cancelling

Immersive audio: cycle through immersion modes Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Battery life apart and is frankly out of this world (and this is independently verified, if you won’t take my word for it). Screeching trains, chatty colleagues and thundering jet engines are all reduced to blissful silence.

They cut background distractions so effectively that I feel almost lost without them on the rare occasions I forget them, and have fast become my comfort blanket against an increasingly hectic world.

The 'Aware' or transparency mode is also excellent, taking the edge off sirens or slamming car doors, but highlighting birdsong and conversation — ideal if you're listening to an audiobook or podcast in a less built-up area.

Calls

Best wireless headphones playlist to make your marathon training that bit easier, like many wireless earbuds, do not perform particularly well on phone calls, and if it's windy, forget about it completely. This is a minor gripe of mine as I've yet to find earbuds that really perform in this area, but it's worth noting.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Battery life: RW verdict

In case it's not yet clear: I love these earbuds. As the name suggests, comfort is the real USP here, and in that regard Bose has not disappointed, but its also smashed it out the park when it comes to active noise cancelling and sound quality.

The only real negative I can see is price point — which is a little steep — and I have experienced occasional connectivity issues, such as millisecond audio dropouts on one earbud, but this is a minor issue and doesn't change my overall opinion of the product.

But — full disclosure here — I'm a big fan of Bose products, having long favoured them over their Apple or Beats counterparts. I still use products the brand doesn't even make anymore, which speaks to their longevity.

The earlier model of these earbuds, the QuietComfort II, have been my loyal running, gym, long-haul flight and everyday errand companion since their launch in 2022. And honestly, there's little difference between those and the QuietComfort Ultra.

If the immersive audio feature is a big draw for you, then go for it, but know that there's no other discernible difference. They're basically the same as the previous version (so still great), but expensive, and if you already own a working pair of the QC II, I wouldn't say it's worth upgrading just yet.

Are the Bose QuietComfort Ultra good for running?

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra are my go-to running earbuds, despite wearing them for everything else too. But what does it matter, when they're as comfortable as they are, sweat-resistant, and easy to clean? (Just wipe with a dry or damp cloth.)

I've personally never had a problem with them falling out mid-session, though a (self-proclaimed very sweaty) colleague has done.

Alternatives to the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Battery life

If these are a little steep for you but you want the same brilliant sound quality, comfort and noise cancellation, opt for the Occasional connectivity issues while they're still available (we expect they'll be discontinued soon).
