Police have confirmed that a man has died after collapsing during the Middlesbrough parkrun on Saturday morning. The runner was taken ill during the 5K run at Stewart Park, Middlesbrough.

North East Ambulance services were called to the scene shortly before 10am on Saturday. The runner, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead shortly after. The runner’s family have been informed.

"Officers attended but sadly the man was declared dead shortly afterwards."

On the parkrun’s facebook page, organisers shared two statements, the first read, “Hello everyone. As some of you might be aware there was a medical emergency at the park this morning involving one of our runners. I understand this is distressing for all involved. We are keen to respect the privacy of the family at this time and we will update you in due course. Thank you to all that helped.”

The second, three hours later, read, “Following our earlier post, it is with great sadness that I am able to confirm that the runner involved in the medical emergency this morning has died. We are unable to identify the runner at this time but can provide assurances that his family are aware. Once again I would like to thank all involved in assisting this morning. Parkrun do have support services in place and if anyone feels like they would benefit from these please do not hesitate to get in touch. Our thoughts are with everyone touched by this incident.”

Fellow parkrunners left comments of condolence on the message. One runner wrote, “Very sad news, thoughts with the family at this sad time. Love to all, parkrunner from Worsley woods.” Another wrote, “So sad to read about the loss of one of the parkrun family. The family, friends, runners and event team are in all our thoughts and prayers. Heaton parkrun Manchester.”
