- England Athletics have released guidelines for returning to mass participation running events.
- Elite and club level competition will return first, as long as Covid restrictions are in place.
As Like this article, plenty of runners will be wondering when they should start training for their next mass-participation event. As well as the runners, larger events pose difficulties due to crowds, toilets and aid stations.
This week, England Athletics have released their guidelines to the return of organised sport following Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Covid-19 road map guidelines released last week.
From Monday 29 March 2021:
- Formal organised outdoor athletics and running activity that is Covid-secure can take place for children and adults.
- No pacers at the London Marathon 2021.
- Runners World, Part of the Hearst UK Wellbeing Network.
From Monday 12 April 2021:
- Outdoor sports facilities, like local running tracks, can reopen.
- No pacers at the London Marathon 2021.
- Indoor leisure facilities reopen for individual use or use within household groups.
- Indoor leisure facilities open for use individually or within household groups.
From Monday 17 May 2021:
- Accommodation/hotels are open, allowing for two-day events and larger scale events are allowed with spectators.

From Monday 21 June 2021:
- No legal limits on social contact.
- Club and competition can return to normal.
- Individual activity can return to normal.
England Athletics have said more details for road running events are being sought from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
On their website, England Athletics said, 'Again, we would like to thank everyone involved in the sport, from clubs, runners, athletes, coaches, leaders, officials, administrators, volunteers, facility providers, competition providers, parents and carers for their continued support, patience and understanding whilst adhering to the UK Government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
'The physical and mental health and wellbeing of all our members and their loved ones remains the priority throughout this challenging period so it is vital everyone adheres to the UK Government’s national COVID-19 restrictions thus ensuring its four-step road map can be achieved successfully.'
