- The Berlin Marathon has announced they are hoping for a field of 35,000 runners at the 2021 Berlin Marathon as part of a pilot project as Germany eases Covid-19 restrictions.
- Yesterday, organisers outlined plans to host a test 10K race in July and a half marathon in August.
Providing the rate of infection remains low at the two test events, a field of 35,000 runners will be able to take part in the Berlin Marathon on Sunday 26 September. In a statement, organisers wrote, 'Confidence, a lot of confidence is currently prevailing here in Berlin after the hybrid press conference held on June 7th called “We can finally run together again—safely!”. Restart Running is the name of an announced pilot project that is intended to guarantee the return of major running events.'
'There is no certainty that the Berlin Marathon can take place, but the probability is there,' Berlin senator Andreas Geise added. 'If the incidence rates continue to fall, approval of the pilot project is conceivable.'
If the race went ahead, it would have a field of 35,000 runners, 10,000 less than the 45,000 who took part in the 2019 Berlin Marathon.
Runners wanting to take part would need to prove they have been fully vaccinated, or undergo a PCR test before racing.
