Whether you were on the startline of this year’s New York Marathon, or are hoping to be lining up on Staten Island next November, here’s everything you need to know about getting a place in the 2020 New York Marathon from the UK.

When is the 2020 New York Marathon?

The golden rules of first-time marathon training.

When does the ballot open for the 2020 New York Marathon?

As next year’s New York Marathon will be the race’s 50th anniversary, organisers are giving runners an extra chance to enter on the ballot. Runners can enter to be one of the first 50 people to get a place for 50 hours after this year’s race finished. The early drawing application will close on Tuesday 5 November 2019 at 1pm in the UK. The drawing will take place on Tuesday 5 November 2019.

All applicants who are unsuccessful will automatically be entered into the second ballot, which opens on Thursday 30 January 2020 and closes on Thursday 13 February 2020. The drawing of the second ballot will take place on Wednesday 26 February 2020. You can enter the ballot here.

When will I find out whether I’ve been successful in the ballot?

If you have been successful in the first early ballot, you will hear shortly after the drawing on Tuesday 5 November. If you are successful in the second ballot, you can expect to hear on or after Wednesday 26 February 2020.

How much does it cost runners from the UK to take part in the New York Marathon?

For non-US citizens, running the New York marathon comes with a pretty hefty price tag. The cost of the bib alone is $358, which at the time of writing converts to £277. When you combine this with travel and accommodation costs, it’s definitely a marathon you’ll need to budget for. It’s also worth remembering that, like other marathon majors, the entry fee is charged upon acceptance and is non-transferable and non-refundable.

I’m pretty quick, can I qualify for a New York place?

If you have run a time qualifying marathon from 1 January - 31 December 2019, you can apply for a guaranteed place in the New York Marathon from Thursday 20 January 2020 to Thursday 13 February 2020. The time standards for the 2020 New York Marathon are as follows:

How else can I get a guaranteed place?

The other ways to get a guaranteed place in the 2020 New York Marathon are completing 15 or more New York Marathons or nine qualifying NYRR races, plus one volunteering stint. Both of these options are pretty tricky for runners in the UK, so it might be easier to look for a spot with a NYRR international travel partner. Often the cost of the trip will include your race entry, travel and accommodation. Runners from the UK can also apply to run through a charity place.

Is there anything else I should know?

Runners should be sure they want to take part in the marathon before signing up. Unlike other marathons, your race entry is non-refundable, and while you can cancel your entry, deferring it for a year, you will have to pay your entry fee again to take part in the following year’s race.
