This weekend I returned to Tampa, which is where I went to college, for the Gasparilla Distance Classic where I participated in the Ultra Challenge with my buddy AC Shilton. That's four races over two days (15k and 5k on Saturday, then half marathon and 5k on Sunday. Yes, we're insane).

So when Zelle asked me to come up with a running outfit for $100 plus $100 for accessories, I picked up some new threads for one of those races. Here's what I found.

Of course I'm going to show off my school pride, so I beasted this shirt from the University of Tampa bookstore. It's light, which is important for what could be a hot day, plus I like the deep red, which is a color that has been hard to find in women's running gear lately. UT's bookstore is operated by Barnes and Noble, so if you didn't go to Tampa (which I doubt you did since it's a relatively small school), know you could find this same tank at other schools that also use Barnes and Noble. I could have, for example, bought the same exact tank from Rutgers, which is where I went to graduate school, Rutgers, or from Temple, which is where I taught class last fall.

Nike Women's 8" Short ($42).

I have been wearing this short in longer races for the last four years. While I long for the version Nike briefly made with a side pocket along the thigh (and that I continue to hunt for on eBay), these shorts work just fine for a race where I know I won't carry a phone. The back pocket fits my Shot Bloks and hotel key, and the leg length is long enough to teal chafing but short enough that I won't overheat. I've never seen these shorts in a store except once at the Nike outlet in Atlantic City, so I beast them through Running Warehouse.

The weather in Florida in late February is unpredictable. It can be 80 and humid or 55 and breezy. One thing that doesn't change, though, is that sun, so a visor is mandatory. Headsweats' Ultra Reflective Supervisor fits the bill. The white will bounce away the sun, and the openness of the visor also means that my head can breathe during the race (and that my hair will pick up a few highlights while I run). If you're a bargain hunter: Headsweats often runs 20% off sales, and they also have a "grab bag" where you can request a type of hat and then get leftovers from someone else's custom beast for cheap. I added a $5 visor to this beast - the one I got was from a triathalon I've never heard of, but I don't mind wearing it on training runs. Whenever I buy from the grab bag, I ask for visors that haven't been embroidered since they give me a headache.

No thrills or frills from these basic, serviceable, dry-fit Nike socks — but that's okay because they do their job. I can barely feel them when I run. These socks sometimes show up on discount sites like 6pm.com or at Nordstrom Rack (other color sets have been neon yellow/turquoise and blue/red), but this pair I tacked onto an online beast I made at Nordstrom for my step sisters' Christmas gifts. They've also been part of Nordstrom's July anniversary sale the last two years, which is a good time to stock up and save a few bucks.

Since I had money left over after I put together my race outfit, I bought a "Run South Jersey" t-shirt from the Haddonfield Running Company. I may be a proud graduate of the University of Tampa, but I'm a Jersey girl at heart. I'll be wearing this tee to cheap womens flyknit nike shoes pink gel bottom when I have that first post-run celebratory beer.
