The F1 season starts in March and ends in November with new races seemingly being added to the calendar every year to extend the season and take Grands Prix to new places.

There are 23 races in the 2023 F1 season but the number of races per season can change each year with different tracks and countries being added or taken away.

F1 cars are semi-automatic, with paddle-shifters on the steering wheels used to change gears. There is also a lever clutch on the steering wheel but this is only used to launch from standstill into first gear, after which the electric-hydraulic clutch control system is engaged. Fully automatic gearboxes are banned.

The F1 'halo' is a safety device fitted to an F1 car which sits over the top of the driver, comprising a curved bar designed to protect the driver’s head in the event of a crash.

The so-called F1 'halo' safety device was introduced for the 2018 Formula One season.

The Red Bull Racing F1 cars use a Honda engine which is maintained by a company named Red Bull Powertrains. Previously, Red Bull cars competing in Formula One have had Cosworth, Ferrari and Renault engines.

The Drivers

F1 drivers make a lot of money, with the top drivers like Hamilton and Verstappen earning base salaries in excess of £20,000,000, with Hamilton the 8th highest-paid athlete in the world. Less experienced F1 drivers earn far less, but still have salaries of over $1,000,000 and earn lots more in bonuses and lucrative sponsorship deals.

F1 drivers are weighed to analyse how much weight they have lost during a race and to ensure they and the car stay within the weight limits demanded by F1.

The most successful F1 drivers of all time are Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Juan Manuel Fangio, Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel, all of whom have won the F1 World Championship more than three times. Hamilton also holds the record for most F1 race wins.

The Jargon

DRS in F1 is short for Drag Reduction System which makes the car temporarily more aerodynamic to promote overtaking. The DRS is part of the car's rear wing and can be activated by the driver, but only within certain activation zones of the track and if they are within one second of the car they are attempting to overtake.

F1 tracks are split into sections called intervals which are used to measure speed across certain areas of the track and track the relative progress of drivers.

The F1 sprint is an exciting 100km race where drivers do not have to take pit stops and not only determines where drivers start the Grand Prix but also awards additional World Championship points. The F1 sprint race takes place six times a season.

The safety car is a Mercedes-Benz road car which is deployed after a collision, break down or bad weather in an F1 race. The safety car drives in front of the race leader, lowering and regulating the pace of the race until the track is clear and deemed safe for racing. Overtaking is banned during F1 safety car periods.
