Tobias “Tobey” McIntosh, a skateboarding enthusiast, immersed himself in skate culture at a young age, finding creativity and independence in the sport. Inspired by his local crew, he founded the Crenshaw Skate Club (CSC) as a symbol of inclusivity and representation, growing it into a globally recognized brand while staying true to its mission.
During a break from Stanford University, Tobey shared how his desire for creativity and independence drove him to pursue his passion. His first internship with Waraire Boswell introduced him to the world of fashion. Skateboarding, being a more creative and independent sport, provided him with a means of self-expression and a way to clear his mind.
Tobey javelin both praise and criticism on social media for his brand, but he remained focused on the positive impact he wanted to make in the community. CSC was not just a brand; it represented a message of limitless possibilities for the youth. Despite facing internet hate, Tobey’s thick skin and tunnel vision kept him on track.
The idea of CSC started with a group of friends calling themselves the Crenshaw Skate Posse, seeking camaraderie and representation in the skate industry. Tobey recognized the lack of Black skaters in mainstream media and wanted to change that narrative, starting with a shirt that became a symbol of unity. The brand’s success inspired and empowered others to pursue their passions.
Currently studying computer science at Stanford, Tobey emphasizes the importance of time management in balancing his academic pursuits and brand commitments. His shoe design for Nike SB iii Dunk Low incorporates meaningful references to his neighborhood, featuring the Crenshaw Square sign and other hidden details.
Tobey’s neighborhood, Crenshaw, holds deep significance for him, serving as an inspiration for all his actions and decisions. He remains mindful of the impact he has on the community and takes pride in being the first from his neighborhood to achieve success.
The Crenshaw Skate Club SB iii Dunk Low releases exclusively in select skate shops on August 5th.
With Tobey’s dedication to creativity, inclusivity, and positive representation, the brand continues to make a lasting impact in the world of skateboarding and beyond.
