MONCLER RE/ICONS: Redefining the Legendary Karakorum

As part of Moncler’s Re/Icons series, the brand redefines its iconic Karakorum jacket in a bevy of material executions, colours and details.

1954 marked a significant milestone in the history of outdoor exploration. Prior to that year, the summit of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, had yet to be successfully reached, a feat that required fearless explorers wearing the most technically progressive garments possible. The 11 Italian mountaineers, which included the likes of Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacadelli, required garments suited to the harsh, unforgiving environments they’d find themselves in. Moncler’s expertise and alpine roots made the brand the perfect candidate to outfit this team of exploration pioneers. That jacket of choice was the Moncler Karakorum, constructed using a double-down insulation for warmth and fitted with adjustable toggles, a formula which established the blueprint for Moncler’s iconic down jackets that would follow.

As part of Moncler’s Re/Icons campaign, where the brand’s past is reinterpreted to formulate the future, the ever-iconic Karakorum is looked at through a contemporary lens, adding new dimensions to a rich and illustrious brand DNA. Channelling that, Moncler draws on the heritage of the Karakorum, altering the iconic jacket with heavy references to both the past and the future.

The jacket is reworked in a slew of colours and material makeups, namely the Karakorum Cotton which nods heavily to the utilitarian codes of the original, the Ripstop which is inspired by the famous paninari subculture through its colours and shiny nylon laqué and the Karakorum Tech Jersey which takes on a more understated, contemporary look for the city. Both the Karakorum Cotton and the Tech Jersey are detailed with stencil-like font at the back, displaying “Moncler Karakorum” above the year the jacket was born.
