Stone Island was founded in 1982, following an experimentation Massimo Osti carried out on discarded military tarpaulins. The material he had created would be named Tela Stella: a cotton canvas that was coated with resin, dyed on either side and then washed with pumice stones. This set the tone for the decades that would follow, with the label pursuing material innovation with an unrelenting focus from that day onwards.

Next year, Stone Island will have been developing garments for 40 years — a period which has seen the label go from strength to strength, delving deeper into textile innovation and continuously pushing the boundaries of experimentation.

To celebrate that, Stone Island is teasing the forthcoming SS22 collection — one designed to pay tribute to the label’s four-decade strong legacy with one foot in the archives and the other in the now. The garments featuring throughout the collection reflect that, with everything from thermosensitive pieces — nodding to that ever-iconic Ice Jacket from ’88 — to contemporary takes on the label’s Marina line being present.
