Sportswear sneaker and clothing giant Nike needs no introduction. The brainchild of coach Bill Bowerman and athlete Philip Knight, the brand was originally dubbed Blue Ribbon Sports when it was founded in Portland in 1964. After the company’s first employee Jess Johnson suggested the name Nike, a nod to the Greek Goddess of victory, the label changed and the journey to the top of the sportswear game began.
Synonymous with its sneakers, Nike’s first creation, the 'Moon Shoe', was made using Bowerman's waffle iron and believe it or not, it was former NASA engineer Frank Rudy who had the revolutionary idea to use Air technology in sneakers. Fast forward to 87 and the legendary Nike Air Max 1 became the first style to make this technology visible. For the latest colourways of this classic design.
However if its b-ball heritage you’re after, take the Nike Air Force 1 for a spin, Bruce Kilgore’s hoops icon first hit the shelves in 1982, and was the first basketball shoe to feature Air cushioning. This signature style was co-opted by the early ‘00s hip-hop scene, with Nelly’s ‘Air Force Ones’ cementing its legacy.
