How to Cop: Nike x Virgil Abloh "The Ten"

"Incoming" Watch this space.

Virgil Abloh's relationship with Nike began long before he first visited the company’s world headquarters in October 2016 to embark upon a new collaboration that would dominate conversation on the international sneaker-scene throughout 2017.

As a teenager, living in Rockford, Illinois, - far off the premium-sneaker-beaten track he now finds himself a guardian of - Virgil remembers that he and his friends would pass the time by sketching sneaker concepts and sending them to Nike. While then the path to where we are now was distant and unclear, the intention has existed for decades; for Virgil Abloh, this collaboration is the realisation of a life-long vision.

From the moment Abloh set foot in Nike's Beaverton HQ, it was clear he had come with an intention to create. Unwilling to spend months in discussions, Abloh made use of his open-source design identity to work from the ground up learning how each shoe was constructed by physical investigation of each silhouette.

Using everyday craft items like Stanley knives and hand-needles, Abloh went back to his architectural roots to deconstruct and then reconstruct icons of footwear in a creative language that celebrates each individual element and its contribution to the final product. The result is one of the quickest end-to-end turnarounds of a major sneaker collaboration ever seen - in development for just 9 months.

I wanted to underscore how the design system and manufacturing of Nike are so perfect. By combining these shoes with design that amplifies their ‘handmade’ quality, we’re intensifying the human element and expanding the emotional connection of these 10 icons.-Virgil Abloh-

A celebration of the longevity of sneakers, with silhouette's transcendence of generations and ability to remain relevant to youth culture for decades central to the intention of "The Ten", Abloh's reconstruction of icons series sets a new bar in the development of collaborations with substance.
