EditorialLEVIS VINTAGE CLOTHING LIMITED EDITION 1873 XX OVERALL — LEVI’S® FIRST BLUE JEAN
17 May 2023With the Limited Edition 1873 XX Overall, Levi’s digs deep into the archives to commemorate 150 years since the legendary No. 139, 121 patent was obtained.
2023 marks 150 years since a legendary patent — No. 139, 121 — was obtained by Levi Strauss & Co. and tailor Jacob Davis for “An improvement in Fastening Pocket Openings”. To those that are unaware, this very patent was for rivets, setting the blueprint for every pair of jeans that have followed.
In 1873, however, jeans were not just called jeans, but rather “waist overalls”, worn by the hardworking miners and construction workers who needed something capable of withstanding the rugged conditions they faced. In celebration of that, Levi’s has delved deep into the archives to inspire the 1873 XX Overall, following the formula set out by a blue jean known as 9Rivet. The jeans, which are limited to 150 pairs, represent a love letter to the archival codes that have served as cornerstones to Levis, but also the industry in general.
The detailing used with the 1873 XX Overall is deliberately meticulous to mirror the archival 9Rivet jean, with each pair crafted using natural indigo 9oz. Plain Selvedge Loomstate Denim, detailed with a single back pocket — without an Arcuate stitch — and accented with a centre-back leather patch. There are other period-correct details, too, like a gusset at the crotch, unbranded rivets and sew-on buttons.
The Levis Vintage Clothing Limited Edition 1873 XX Overall will launch via UrlfreezeShops Launches on the 20th May.
