The world's biggest sportswear brand was born in Portland in 1964, when coach Bill Bowerman and athlete Philip Knight started importing Japanese sneakers under the banner of Blue Ribbon Sports. In 1978, former NASA engineer Frank Rudy had the revolutionary idea to use Air technology in sneakers.
