Inspired by the President of the United States, the basketball sneaker was named "Air Force 1" in reference to the presidential airplane. Production of the Air Force 1 started with a bang in 1982. Nike signed six NBA players to wear the AF1 on the court to mark the release. The "Original Six" were Moses Malone, Michael Cooper, Bobby Jones, Calvin Natt, Mychal Thompson and Jamal Wilkes.
