Named after the rope makers of the 18th century, the so-called Reepschläger, the 800-metre-long street became a notorious reputation among locals and sailors from all over the world in the 1920s for its unbridled nightlife with live music, dance venues and all forms of adult entertainment.

After World War II, sex, drugs & rock'n'roll conquered the Reeperbahn, crowned by the Beatles' career start in the early 1960s. The feeling of boundless freedom was always shared by the neighborhood with crimes and powerful gangsters, some of them legends beyond death to this day.

Times change...and so, despite the upheaval, some of the neighborhood's legendary institutions have survived the change almost unscathed. Among them are historical places like the bar ZUR RITZE, which achieved world fame with its famous spread legs on the front door. The windowless backyard pub houses a fully equipped boxing club in the basement, which is still used today.

In the early 1980s, the pub was the centre of the milieu and became a place where deadly shootings happened, while internationally renowned fighters completed their training camps and prepared for their fights in the Box Gym below.
