Started and inspired by New York, designer Sandy Liang often utilizes a personal touch when it comes to design, employing an aesthetic reflective of her personal style while even casting her very own grandma to model her first collection. The Queens native, whose pieces bask in a rare flexibility, seems to do whatever she so chooses as sturdy fleece jackets lie on display one second and floral dresses the next. Vans, likely taken up with Liang, has enlisted her for what is to be the first footwear collaboration of her young career: the Old Skool, Slip-On, Era, and many a classic define this expansive assortment with a vast array of apparel arriving in tow.
The latter, which is the most straightforward visually, plays on contemporary streetwear with loud prints and the currently trending tie-dye, though the pattern more so attunes with indigo shibori techniques. Checkerboard prints make overt nods to the Anaheim’s brand’s heritage — covering a few of the tees’ sleeves — while more maximal all-over executions take the form of polka dots and nautical stripes in collared shirts and boat necks, respectively. The sneakers, which total to a count of five, are all unique expect for a set of two, an Old Skool and Era, who share a core construction of pink velour accented with dazzling jewelry. Apart, the Slip-On adds aggression to animal furs, covering the entirety of the model’s platform variation in a snow leopard, a swatch that essentially reverses its Sahara sibling who seats opposite to the plaid seen on the Sport silhouette. Rounding off the set, another Old Skool arrives in neutrals to celebrate the Lower East Side.
